The Episcopal See of Ègara is an exceptional witness to the monumental architecture and painting of the Visigothic period. The creation of the bishopric of Ègara (founded around 450) marked the beginning of the period of the greatest splendour in which an episcopal ensemble of exceptional artistic importance for Western Christian Europe developed.

\ \

Highlights include painting and architecture of the buildings of the former Bishopric of Ègara (Cathedral of Santa Maria, Funeral Church of St. Michael, Parish of St. Peter), Romanesque frescoes dedicated to Thomas Becket and Gothic altarpieces.

Due to its exceptional status within European cultural heritage, the candidacy of the Ègara Cathedral for the World Heritage distinction, awarded by UNESCO, is currently under way.
