Clay is the basic material used by potters to create products. When mixed with water it forms a pliable mass that can be modelled, that keeps its shape once dry, and that becomes very hard after being fired. The clay is found in clay deposits known as clay pits. Red clay, which is highly plastic, has traditionally been used to make domestic products; white clay, which is much harder, is more frequently used for tiles.
