Considered to be one of the most important and unusual heritage sites in our country, these mines were opened around 6,000 years ago, in the Neolithic period, and were exploited for nearly a thousand years. They are the oldest gallery mines in Europe, and the only ones for extracting variscite, a mineral used for ornaments that was traded in complex networks across the Western Mediterranean. Once exhausted, some of the mineshafts were then used as funeral chambers. Several unusual finds were made here, such as the trepanned skull and the Venus of Gavà.
At present, the Archaeological Park offers visits to the general public, with audiovisuals, interactive exhibits and a visit to the recreation of a prehistoric mine, with an adapted itinerary that constitutes a journey into the past.
