David by Donatello (copy), 1430-1440, bronze. Palau de Maricel.

Donatello (Donato di Niccolò di Betto Bardi, Florence, 1386-1466) was probably the most important sculptor of the Quattrocento. An artist endowed with great technical skill, Donatello embodied the ideals of the early Florentine Renaissance: classicism, formal beauty, restrained postures, serenity, a certain expressionism ... everything that Renaissance man believed characterised Roman society. His most outstanding works include  John the Baptist as an adolescent, St. George, Repentant Mary Magdalene and David. The Golden Hall exhibits a copy of  David.
