Cathedral of Girona

The Cathedral of Girona offers visitors an impressive collection of art: a large collection of altarpieces, a magnificent sanctuary with an 11th century altar and throne, a baldachin covering a large gold covered altar from the 16th century, and stained glass windows by Sean Scully, completed in 2011. These are just an example of some of the treasures held within the walls of the cathedral. The cloister, from the 12th century, shows numerous spires decorated with biblical scenes, some of which are very strange and surprising.

The Treasury is where visitors can find the impressive art collection that the Girona Cathedral Chapter has preserved and added to over time. The four rooms show pieces from different periods, displaying a variety of styles and techniques, and many of these works are important pieces in art history. Within the collection the highlights include the famous Creation Tapestry (Tapis de la Creació), alongside more surprising pieces such as the chest of Hisham II, the sculpture of Saint Charlemagne, the Beatus and the seal of Countess Ermessenda of Carcassonne, to name a few.
