The Capellades Paper Mill Museum is located in the town of Capellades (60km from Barcelona) in an 18th-century paper mill, known as the Molí de la Vila (Town Mill). The building has a surface area of ​​2,200m2 and consists of four floors and a basement. Next to the mill stands the Bassa, a small natural lake from which 12 million litres of water flow each day.  This water was an energy source for sixteen paper mills in operation in the area. Thanks to this hydrological abundance and its geographic location, close to large towns with good links between them, Capellades and its surrounding area (La Pobla de Claramunt, Carme, San Pere de Riudebitlles...) became established as one of the major paper-making centres in Spain during the 18th and 19th centuries. The paper from this area, especially untrimmed and cigarette paper, was sold to a large part of the Spanish market and also to the American colonies. Famous names in paper-making, such as Sorteras, Romeu and Guarro, came to the fore in the late 18th century. Among these, the Serra and the Romaní brands stand out as having acquired international renown.
