Diocesan and Comarcal Museum of Solsona

The Museu Diocesà i Comarcal de Solsona (Diocesan and Comarcal – or County – Museum of Solsona) was started in 1896, when Bishop Ramon Riu i Cabanes, moved by a desire to conserve and disseminate knowledge of the cultural heritage of his diocese, inaugurated the Musaeum Archaelogicum de Solsona, as one of the first diocesan museums in Catalonia. In the first half of the twentieth century, the museum added a new section on prehistory. The museum’s present home, the Bishop’s Palace, was completely renovated during the 1980s under the patronage of the Bishop of Solsona, the Generalitat of Catalonia and the town council of Solsona: the diocese contributed with the building and its own collections, the Generalitat archaeological material from the Solsonès district, and the town council its ethnographic collection. This created a rich resource of multidisciplinary collections on the historic and artistic heritage of the different districts that comprise the Solsona diocese, covering a time span that runs from the Neolithic period to the twentieth century.
