The Museum of Cinema opened on 8 April 1998 in a building in the centre of the city of Girona.

The permanent exhibition offers a journey through 400 years of the history of the moving image, with information on the history of cinema as a technique and as a visual spectacle, from the beginnings of cinema until the arrival of the television. It also shows the roots of our visual culture, which is so important and so present in modern life. The permanent exhibition is interactive, and with twenty audiovisual displays the museum has something to offer for people of all ages.

The Tomàs Mallol Collection includes cinematographic and pre-cinematographic exhibits, and is the basis of the permanent exhibition. Collected over a period of thirty years by Tomàs Mallol and acquired by Girona City Council in 1994, it is one of the most important collections on the genre in the world.
