The Museum of Montserrat presents to the public the best of the abbey of Montserrat’s artistic and archaeological heritage. It offers six quite different collections, and the objects on display – more than 1,300 pieces – span a broad time period. The oldest piece is an Egyptian sarcophagus from the 22nd century BC, while the most recent one is a painting by Sean Scully from 2010. The section on old painting from the 13th to 18th century features works by Berruguete, El Greco, Caravaggio, Luca Giordano and Tiepolo. Another stand-out collection features 19th and 20th century Catalan painting, one of the best in the country with such important names as Fortuny, Rusiñol, Casas, Nonell, Mir, Gimeno, Anglada-Camarasa, Picasso and Dalí, among others. French Impressionism is also represented with works of Monet, Sisley, Degas and Pissarro. Finally, both temporary exhibition halls are a sign of our interest in contemporary culture and art.
