The Diocesan and Comarcal Museum of Lleida

The Diocesan and Comarcal Museum of Lleida is the custodian of two great centenarian collections from the city of Lleida. The first is an archaeological collection passed on by the Institut d’Estudis Ilerdencs, which had inherited it from the Museu d’Antiguitats, established in 1868. The second is a collection of fine art from the old Diocesan Museum of Lleida, founded in 1893. The museum also curates collections lent by the chapter of the cathedral of Lleida, as well as items ceded by the Department of Culture of the Generalitat de Catalunya, the National Art Museum of Catalonia and the Archaeological Museum of Catalonia, and a number of private collections.

The primary aim of the museum is to be of service to the people from the espiscopal diocese of Lleida to the towns and villages of the Plain of Lleida and thus aspires to being a focus for the preservation, celebration and promotion of the cultural heritage of the wide territory it calls home. The permanent exhibition brings together almost a thousand items, as markers on a journey through the history and the culture of the region which has the city of Lleida as its natural capital.
