Çò de Joanchiquet de Vilamòs Ecomuseum

The Çò de Joanchiquet de Vilamòs (Can Joanchiquet) Ecomuseum opened its doors in 1996. It is a traditional Aran-style house, known as auviatge or còto where an enclosed courtyard organises the different spaces: family home, stables, orchard, garden, etc.

The first known owner was Juan Aunós, in the second half of the 16th century. The Aunós house was inhabited uninterruptedly for ten generations until the 1960s. They were a family of wealthy farmers who enjoyed a prominent social and political position within the Aran community. Some of its members became mayors and councillors of the Conselh Generau d’Aran (General Council of Aran) in the 17th and 18th centuries.

In the18th century, the old family residence was extended with a new two-floor building and roof, and a century later, in the 19th century, partial reforms were made.

The stables were built between the 18th and 19th centuries.
