The village of Escaló presents the urban scheme of an enclosed medieval village, back to the 13th century. It is articulated around a central street with houses on both sides, enclosing the urban area with its back walls, which in turn become the protective walls of the village. To learn more, a visit to the Interpretation Centre of the Enclosed Villages of Escaló is highly recommended, where the architecture of these enclosed Pyrenean villages, originated in medieval times, can be closely observed, as well as elements in common —such as walls and doors. By means of interactive audiovisuals and a documentary, the visitor can travel around the main elements of the region’s heritage: the enclosed village of Escaló, the 11th century watchtower and the old monastery of Sant Pere del Burgal.

The Centre’s building, commissioned by the Town Council of Guingueta d'Àneu, has two floors: on the ground floor, the agro-foodstore ‘Lo Rebost d'Escaló’ and on the top floor, the Interpretation Centre.
