Isidre Nonell i Monturiol (Barcelona, from 1872 to 1911) was a Catalan painter and illustrator. He is considered one of the most outstanding Catalan artists of the early 20th century and a key figure of Catalan Art Nouveau with a determination to paint issues that were not fashionable at the time. This watercolour depicts a gypsy woman standing. She is wearing a blue skirt with an apron and a red shawl covering her entire torso. With a scarf she hides the more or less dissheveled hair falling in her serene yet attentive face, as also seen in her posture. The strokes of charcoal are fast and assured, with a highly expressive spontaneity very characteristic of these drawings. The drawing is coloured by mixing cool colours like green and blue with warm colours like red and yellow.
