Strigil sarcophagus from the Palaeo-Christian necropolis of Tarragona.
The front part is divided into five panels, three of which feature figurative art while the remaining two are strigillated. The central panel shows a reading scene, with a seated poet or philosopher wearing a tunic and pallium. He reads in the presence of a herm and two youngsters who listen to him.
The deceased, whose remains are inside the sarcophagus, are portrayed at the ends. The man is on the right, characterised as a philosopher, while his wife, dressed as a muse, is on the left.
