This statue of the Virgin with Child, from Puentedura in the Province of Burgos, can be considered one of the finest of amongst the collection of Romanesque Virgin Marys in the museum. It represents Mary as Sedes Sapientiae (“on the throne of wisdom”), holding the divine Child. Its extraordinary quality and style have seen it related to pieces done in studios on Isle de France during the second half of the 12th century.
