Clog-makers made their clogs from a piece of wood (called an escalaborn), which they cut themselves in the forest. They would then work the wood to give it the desired shape, using a bench to chisel and hollow out the piece and to meticulously decorate it. The decoration was more elaborate on women’s clogs, which would also have slightly higher heels. These clogs were worn over the espadrilles, to prevent them getting wet or soiled when entering the pens.
