On the arrival of summer, shepherds and their dogs would lead the flocks to the mountains, filling the passes with their shouting and barking. There they would live in circular, dry-stone-walled huts. Every day, at the crack of dawn, the shepherd, with his herders to the left and right, would lead the flock out to spend the day looking over them. Come the evening, they would place the shepherd's straw mattress by the pen where they kept the animals. On stormy nights, they would have to walk around the pen to reassure the animals and stop them from panicking.
