The manual loom weaves the threads to make cloth. It works by passing the horizontal thread, the weft, through the vertical threads, the warp, to make woven cloth. It consists of a frame, batten, two or more heddles, a shuttle carrying the thread of the weft and a bar to gather the cloth.

There looms were in active use in domestic production until the 19th century, despite the advent of textile industries along the Ter and Freser rivers.
