September was the time to harvest the maize, beans and potatoes, to gather in the apples and pears, and beat the walnuts from the trees. In the autumn the best grain was selected for sowing, and the time was soon approaching to till the land with a plough drawn by bulls, cows or mules, steered by the countryman's steady hand to ensure the furrow was straight.
