Frontal of the Epiphany

Frontal of the Epiphany, 15th century. Vic Episcopal Museum.

Frontal of the Epiphany, 15th century. Vic Episcopal Museum.

This frontal uses a single piece of high-quality, refined cloth as its base. It has a warp and pile weave of silk made on a velvet loom with pedals, and is decorated with a passementerie fringe of red and gold silk. The centre is occupied by an embroidered representation of the Epiphany. The three kings are dressed as noblemen from the second half of the 15th century, a good example of courtly fashions of the time. The embroidery is in the Flemish needle-painting style.
