Lluís Borrassà is one of the principal painters from the early International Gothic period, when the balanced forms and colour of Italianate Gothic gave way to a more naturalistic dynamic style which used livelier colours and stronger contrasts. The MEV preserves a representative collection of works by Borrassà, which includes this altarpiece, considered a masterpiece of European painting of the period. Intended for the convent of Santa Clara in Vic, the programme is centred on the institution of the three Franciscan orders by Saint Francis and a triple devotion to the evangelical vows of poverty, chastity and obedience.
