This type of brazier, with rings and wheels for moving it, derives from a Romanesque type, or even older. Widespread in southern Europe, it continued to be used in the 14th and 15th centuries. It appears in a number of iconographical images, including the Nativity Scene on the altarpiece from the Parish Church of Montanyana, painted by Pere Garcia de Benavarri in the second half of the 15th century. The function of these braziers was to heat the liturgical space and to keep the fuel for the incense alight.
