Sword, Castell de Pijoert, Les, 15th century. Musèu dera Val d'Aran.

A sword made of iron, with the remains of its wood and leather sheathe with a metal end, found in 1997 during excavations at Castell de Pijoert in Les, ancestral home of the Senyor, or Lord, of Les.

The sword would have belonged to one of the soldiers defending the castle. It is considered a “work” sword since it has no ornamental flourishes of any sort. The poor condition we see it in today is due to its having been buried for centuries under the ruins of the castle, which was completely destroyed by a fire.
