The Modernist water tank at Can Mario is an outstanding example of the industrial heritage of Catalonia (1904-1905).

The Modernist water tank at Can Mario is an outstanding example of the industrial heritage of Catalonia (1904-1905).

This Art Nouveau water reservoir (asset of national cultural interest), which was built in 1905, is located in the former Can Mario cork factory. Over time, it has become a true symbol identifying Palafrugell and its skyline, as well as a prominent feature in Catalonia’s industrial heritage because of its structure and artistic values.

Through an exhibition and an audiovisual, visitors can delve into the history and unique features of this structure: who developed it, who designed it, who built it, what purpose it served within the factory and why Art Nouveau decoration was applied to it when the majority of water reservoirs in the cork industry were merely functional.

Finally, visitors can climb the 182 stairs to the top of the reservoir and from a height of 30 metres, catch views of impressive wrought-iron work and enjoy wonderful, unique scenic views of Palafrugell and Empordanet.
