Invented by Joseph Plateau in 1832, this device consists of a disc with slots that are arranged with twelve or more images showing the successive phases of a particular motion. Using nuts and bolts, the disc is fixed at the end of a rod or shaft and is rotated in front of a mirror. The image reflected by the mirror and shown through the grooves appears in a fluid, natural movement. The phenakistoscope was the first device that animated images.
