The head of a monster or demon painted on the glass plate to be projected with the magic lantern, in a phantasmagoria show. The mechanised plate allows the eyes of the monster to move.

Phantasmagoria shows were carefully staged and the screening was done from behind a screen (projection) to prevent the public from seeing the projector. The black background meant that the box around the projection could not be seen, and avoided revealing the trick.
