In Java the shadow theatre is called wayang kulit, a name also given to its figures, which are made from animal hide that is painstakingly decorated with incisions and hand-coloured. These theatres presented ancestral mythological stories from the oral tradition, such as the Ramayana. Heroes, demons, monsters and other mythological figures were the main characters of this shadow theatre, one of the most famous in the Far East which is performed still today as part of its traditional culture.
