The old Asland cement factory, located in Clot del Moro in the municipality of Castellar de n'Hug, was in operation from 1904 to 1975. The remains, still visible today, reveal just how spectacular one of industrialised Catalonia’s most outstanding manufacturing plants was, in the midst of a unique natural environment.
The plant is currently under the aegis of the National Museum of Science and Technology of Catalonia (MNACTEC), and is home to the Castellar de n'Hug Cement Museum, which opened its doors in 2002. The factory and the surrounding area were declared a Cultural Asset of National Importance in 2005, in the category of historical monument.
A visit to the museum provides us with an insight into the impressive set of remains of this industrial complex erected by a group of industrialists in the early twentieth century. The factory supplied cement in times of strong industrial growth, in a society in need of both new infrastructure and housing as well as new production sites.
