Maqabriya funerary stela12th century. Tortosa Museum.

The cemeteries of Al-Andalus were normally located outside the town walls, although we know of exceptions to this rule. This is the case of the La Suda necropolis in Tortosa, where burials from the 10th to the 12th centuries have been found. The funerary stela you can see here is of the type known as maqabriya, which is characteristic of the 12th century. It is decorated with segments of suras from the Koran. The inscriptions are in Kufic, an ancient Arabic script.
