Female bust, 4th-3rd century BC. Tortosa Museum.

Here we see a collection of busts depicting a Greek goddess. Among all the possible uses, of particular interest is that of a thymiaterion, a Greek word for the vessels used to burn aromatic substances for spiritual and religious purposes. They had a hole in the back which served two purposes: to prevent breakage while it was being fired in the kiln and to draw in air to help burn the substances deposited in the perforated pan at the top.
