Elaine Kilmurray, the author of Sargent’s catalogue raisonné, has identified Rose-Marie Ormond, the painter’s niece, as the woman in Montserrat’s The Lady with the Umbrella. Between 1900 and 1913, John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) summered in the Alps with his family. This watercolour comes from a series of female figures that he painted in Simplon in 1911, most of which are housed in the Museum of Fine Arts of Boston. Despite his friendship with Monet, Sargent could only be considered an Impressionist in the broadest sense. He was the most highly sought-after and paid portraitist of the aristocracy of his time.
