Josep Puig i Cadafalch served as the municipal architect of Mataró from 1892 to 1896. The bulk of his projects and the majority of the jobs in which Puig invested the most effort were associated with the city’s sanitation and urban hygiene. His most important legacy as the municipal architect was the layout of most of the city’s sewer system and the sanitation and modernisation of the conduits providing potable water.
