Francesc Domingo’s The Gamblers was made in the cafe of the Círculo Instructivo y Recreativo in Caldes de Montbui and was presented in public at the Spring Art Exhibition in Barcelona in 1920 where it won a prize. This work is the result of a long process begun the previous year.
Salvador Dalí, in the diary from his youth, comments on this work: «But Domingo's merit is, above all, in having initiated a new painting (not a new concept)...». The Gamblers became an emblem at the time for the artists of their circle, like Josep Obiols or Josep Llorens Artigas.
