Drawing can be understood as a way of capturing an idea, an image or a memory. The technical factors related to its execution make it easier to transfer an idea onto paper more spontaneously than in painting. The painter requires longer time frames to prepare the canvas or to mix colors and, depending on the technique used, will have to work during several different sessions to see the piece completed, as in the case of sculpture also.

This immediacy provides the artist with a greater amount of freedom for execution, and even more so if it’s a trial piece, made as a working hypothesis or simply as an act conceived without the imposition of having to be accepted by a client. Throughout history, drawings have served as elements for learning, for education in the authors’ technical and aesthetic skills and, very often, they reflect the creative genius of their makers like no other medium.

Since the 19th century and with the birth of the modern artist, voluntarily disassociated from the market’s tyranny, drawing has moved beyond the rank of private experimentation or of an element to design future proposals to also become an artistic genre in its own right.
