The tools and implements of the shack builder and his assistants were very simple. They were restricted to the scythe, the barraquera needle, the canyissera needle, an adze, a saw, a flat spade, a shovel, a brush for whitewashing and very little else. Only one of these was exclusive to this trade, the barraquera needle. This was a thick, very long needle whose tip was slightly curved. This meant that the cord could easily pass between the different reeds when sewing the bundles together, which would render the shack waterproof.
