Spengler’s mussel

The Ebre is one of the few rivers that still preserve populations of Spengler’s mussel.

The Ebre is one of the few rivers that still preserve populations of Spengler’s mussel.

Spengler’s mussel is a bivalve with an iridescent thick, hard, ear-shaped shell. It is one of the most endangered molluscs in Europe and on the Ebre, one of the few rivers that still preserve a number of colonies, in this case near Saragossa and in Catalonia. Its shell has been exploited since ancient times for a number of purposes.
