Waterwheel, 19th century, Palma. Museum of Rural Life.

The waterwheel was one of the most important machines in places with irrigated gardens. The waterwheel is a machine used to haul up the underground water which is used to water the gardens.

Over the past 50 years, traditional waterwheels like this one have been replaced by hydraulic pumps, watermills or more modern forms of the waterwheel itself.

This waterwheel was installed in a famous former disco in L’Espluga de Francolí, to which it lent its name for many years.
