Fishing is an activity directly related to the environment, and one that requires extensive knowledge of meteorology, ecology, sailing, ichthyology, ethology, oceanography, fishing technology, communications, sea rescue and survival.

Fishing in the Mediterranean is basically coastal fishing. The maximum distance to the fishing grounds is a day away from port, with the exception of large tuna and some longline fishing.
