A set of surgical or cosmetic instruments from the Pla d’Almatà, 11th century. Museum of la Noguera.

This set of instruments used during the 11th century was retrieved from one of the streets of the Pla d’Almatà district in Balaguer medina.

It was possibly in a bag or case which has not been preserved and is associated both with the medical and surgerical field (ear probes or spatula for the application of eye drops), and with pharmacologyl and personal beauty (application of oils, ointments, creams, perfumes and kohl).

The kohl was used to darken eyelids, but was also associated with pharmacological purposes, such as protecting the eyes from disease.
