The luthier, Étienne Maire Clarà, was one of Barcelona's most important violin makers at the beginning of the 20th century. The violinist, Joan Manén (1883-1971) was one of his great admirers and collaborators and often played Clarà's instruments in concert. In 1964 Manén donated this Étienne Maire Clarà violin, with which he had started his musical career, to the Museu de la Música. The instrument, made of maple and fir, is still played and has some very special features such as, for example, shorter distances between notes than is usually the case with contemporary violins.
