These three instruments form the backbone of the Hindustani music of northern India, and also of Nepal, Bangladesh and Pakistan. The tabla provides the rhythm, while the tambura creates a harmonic pattern in a continuous harmonic loop. With this as a basis, the sitar then creates rich melodies with very sophisticated codas. The sitar and the tambura held at the Museu de la Música are made from gourds and are richly decorated.
