The Launeddas, an instrument from Sardinia. Museum of the Mediterranean.

The Launeddas is one of the oldest woodwind instruments from the Mediterranean (900 BC), and in modern times can only be found in Sardinia. It is made of three simple reed pipes that join together in a cane body. It is a polyphonic instrument and should be played using circular breathing techniques.

The Launeddas is still played during religious ceremonies and dances (known as "su ballu"). Similar instruments, played using similar techniques, can be found along the Mediterranean coastline.
