Montgrí Castle capital, 13th century. Museum of the Mediterranean.

At the top of the Montgrí massif is the Montgrí Castle (13th century). One of the few decorative features of the castle were the four column capitals, two of which are on display in the Museum of the Mediterranean.

These pieces were very simple, and would have been carved by a skilled mason to imitate the iconic features of traditional Roman architecture.

The piece on display here is made of four heads, with a very prominent relief in the upper corners, while the centre features a pineapple.
