“The Indianes printing was not a simple innovation but rather the greatest revolution that had ever occurred in the textile industry. Dress fabrics were previously either rough cheesecloths that were grey or earthy in colour or dyed cloth in a single colour with applications or superimpositions, or they had linear motifs obtained with a brush or perforated trimmings. Only wealthy people were able to afford to wear damask fabrics or gold or brightly-coloured brocades, ornate velvets, oriental silks and other distant influences […].”
