Quite a few tombstones with Roman inscriptions have been found in the area. The inscription on this one tells us of Lucius Emilius Paternus, a distinguished citizen of those days. Born into a rich family at the end of the first century BC, Lucius left Aeso as a young man to pursue a military career. Years later, as a centurion with the Roman legions, he took part in military campaigns in Dacia, present-day Romania, and in Partia, in what is now northern Iran. The emperor Trajan had him decorated several times for his bravery and loyalty, and he was appointed to a number of important posts within the empire.
