Cordwain with the image of St Paul wearing a green tunic. He can be identified by his personal attributes: the sword and the book of his gospels.

The background is gilded and decorated with triangular cut-outs to produce a variety of reflections that give the work a sense of texture. Some authors consider the possibility that these kinds of pieces were part of a much larger work or an altar front or altarpiece which were later removed. A second possibility is that they were conceived as works without a larger iconographic program.
