Until synthetic fibres were introduced, cotton nets were used. Under the full moon, fishermen could not go out fishing because the light did not attract the fish. Rainwater was boiled with pine bark in pots, and the resulting liquid was used on nets and to wipe clotheslines. The lignin from the pine bark made them more resistant and waterproof, staining them a characteristic dark brown colour.
