The economy of Roman Iesso was based mainly on farming and trade. Grain, once harvested, was taken to be winnowed and sieved, separating it from the straw. It was then ready to be ground and turned into flour. This task was carried out in the better-off home by means of a rotary mill like the one on display here. This was composed of a round, stationary stone base on top of which a mobile quernstone was fitted, that was rotated by hand to break and crush the grain.
