Lluís Trepat (Tàrrega, 1925) is mainly associated with introducing abstract art into the Lleida art scene. He was the driving force at the centre of all debate concerning modernity in post-war Lleida. Nevertheless, after 1961, he abandoned abstraction definitively and took up figurative art again, never to abandon it.

Trepat reached the peak of abstraction in 1959, when he started a freer work, the Ovals series, which would result in a very personal and coherent work. This particular piece meant taking up the paintbrush again to consider open spaces that were ordered and harmonious. The importance of gesture was maintained and the range of colours extended, with a clear preference for superimposing basic colours, a consequence of using a spatula. The shapes represented are always oval, contained within the painting's boundaries, and create a geometrical form with a constant and repetitive rhythm defined, as Trepat had done previously at the beginning of his abstract period, by colour.
