The Gothic style was an expression of a time of cultural plenitude that accompanied the expansion of Catalan influence in the Mediterranean. Gothic paintings took the form of large wooden altarpieces and stained glass. The artists of the time used and combined a range of techniques: on plaster, tempera and gold leaf.
The images they produced were intended to communicate sensations and emotions. To make this more effective, they relied on realistic natural settings. They used two techniques to achieve the appearance of real places: perspective and chiaroscuro.
